Nelson A. Melanson, age 91, of Saugus, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 in a local nursing home, following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Goguen) Melanson and the son of the late Alphonse Gulio and Rose Melanson.
Born in New York, Nelson was raised in Digby County, Nova Scotia, before moving to Lynn as a young man. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, having served on several ships including the SS Tide Penn, SS Molino Delrey, SS Anthony Wayne, SS Allantoona and the SS Warrior. Educated in Schools in Canada, he was the former owner of the former Clam Shell Restaurant at the corner of Boston and Franklin Streets in Lynn. Later he became employed by the Saugus School Department where he worked as a custodian for many years. He enjoyed traveling to Digby County in Nova Scotia with his wife, boating, working jigsaw puzzles and camping on Lake Ossipee, which he did for many years.
He is survived by his sons Ronald Melanson and his wife Joanne of Wakefield and Mark Melanson of Saugus. He also leaves his grand daughter Lori Ann Little and her husband Jeff of Lynn, and his son-in-law Robert Grieves of Peabody. He was the father of the late Marie Carol (Melanson) Grieves.
His funeral will be held from the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN & RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt129) Lynn on Friday at 9:30AM, followed by a Funeral Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church, Saugus at 10:30AM. Interment will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4-8PM.
