How Do You Pre-pay For A Funeral?
Some of the most common questions that we are asked regarding pre-arranged funeral plans pertain to pre-payment. You should know that 100% of the funds given to us to pre-pay funeral plans are set aside in either a bank or insurance trust for your protection. The funds are not available to the funeral home until services are actually provided at death. We offer full payment or spread monthly payments up to 10 years (age restrictions may apply). For those who choose full pre-payment, we will guarantee our services and merchandise that are selected and funded with no further payment required. Interest that accrues on the trust funds will be used to offset any inflationary cost increases. Please note that the guarantee does not apply to cash advance items such as church and cemetery costs. However, in most cases, trust interest usually covers any regular increased cost.
Government Benefits information: Persons receiving or applying for SSI (Supplemental Security Income) or Medicaid are currently allowed to exclude from countable assets for benefit determination the following:
1. Burial Space (cemetery lots, crypts, etc.)
2. Irrevocable pre-paid funeral bank or insurance trust accounts
There is NO LIMIT on the amount of funds that can be set aside through the funeral home in an irrevocable pre-paid trust. Burial accounts set up by an individual in a bank, with or without a separate funeral home pre-paid account, are limited to $1,500.00 (limit was reduced in 1991 from $2,500). More complete information regarding other requirements of SSI/Medicaid is available from the local Social Security Office for SSI and the Local Welfare Office for Medicaid as it applies to your individual situation.
